Back in 1983 my family moved to Alabama from Tennessee.  I was in the 5th grade and in the full-on-awkward stage.  Bad hair for days, goofy clothes and pale beyond pale skin.

If you didn’t have an awkward stage, you need to say a prayer of thanks right now.

If you did have one, you know…It was rough.

It was one of the hardest moves of my life.  I told my parents that I would NEVER, EVER be an Alabama girl.

Tennessee ran through my veins.

It was in my blood.

…Thank goodness I wasn’t dramatic…

Then, I made a friend.

She was new as well.  She moved there from another town in Alabama–so obviously she wasn’t as torn over the whole ‘new-state’ issue that I was dealing with, bless my heart.

But we were both in the awkward stage (she would totally agree AND she grew out if it way before I did) and bonded over our ‘newness’.

She became my best friend forever.  We spent weekends at each others houses.  We were cheerleaders together through our high-school years.  We even dated a few of the same boys. By my senior year I lived with her family since my mom and dad moved BACK to Tennessee (Seriously, pick a state already!!)

MM Friends Printable

This friendship has spanned marriages, children, many miles and 3 (cough) decades.

If I had it to do over again, I would always choose to be one of the new girls in Alabama.

Goofy clothes/hair/paleness and all.

I have made many best-friend-forever type friends during my lifetime and I count them all as a blessing.

If you have a friends like mine, this printable is for you.  You are among the lucky.

Let them know how thankful you are.

  10. I love the sentiment in this blog post! It made me think about my own best friend, whom I met in fourth grade. My story is very similar to yours actually! I moved from California to Texas and was just about to enter my lovely (and memorable!) awkward stage. Friends who were awkward together, stay together! Haha!

I was painfully shy as well as awkward! It was not a good time. It was only bearable thanks to my best friend. She was exactly the kind of friend who would save you a seat! Sadly she died a couple of years ago. I feel privileged to have known her and honoured that she was my friend. She was definitely a flower.
